This is a southern copperhead that I almost stepped on. Unfortunately this is the best picture I could get, but it was getting dark out and I didn't want to stuff the camera in his face. Copperheads are the most common venomous snake in the US, and most venomous snakebites in the US are copperhead bites. Nobody has died from a copperhead bite in several years, and they're not particularly dangerous unless your health is otherwise compromised, but it would really hurt if one bit you.
